Research from the University of Toronto has recently revealed that the amount of probiotics present in probiotic yogurts is too low to experience the claimed benefits.
Certain clinical trials have found probiotics to be effective for a host of things, from stomach issues to cavity-causing bacteria. However, the probiotic content in yogurt can be up to 25 times below the minimum of effectiveness. This means that consumers would have to eat more yogurt to have even a chance of achieving the advertised benefits; more could mean 2 servings or 25 servings, depending on the yogurt. Kefir contained the highest dosage of probiotics and the greatest variety of probiotic strains compared to yogurt, but because the specific strain combinations have not been studied, determining the benefits is difficult. It should also be noted that the products used in the study were typical grocery store brands, not health food store brands.
The researchers concluded that probiotics are important for health, and probiotic products still have some value; however, they emphasized that a good probiotic product should have at least 10 billion bacteria per serving.
Our Laktokhan® probiotic contains 10 billion CFU (colony-forming units) of four human strains of “friendly” intestinal microflora: Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Bifidobacterium longum. These friendly bacteria help keep harmful bacteria from multiplying in our intestines. Antibiotics can kill off healthy bacteria and lead to weakened immunity and intestinal disorders. Laktokhan® restores the balance of good bacteria, thus helping to normalize digestive function and boost immunity.
Another feature of Laktokhan® is our packaging. Oxidization kills live bacterial cultures. Oxidization begins to occur the moment the probiotic is exposed to oxygen; when the product is first opened, all capsules begin to lose their potency. To prevent this from happening, each Laktokhan® capsule is blister packed individually and hermetically sealed to keep out oxygen: when one capsule is taken, the others remain fully active, no matter the time difference between dosing. It is shelf stable with full potency for 3 years, and if kept out of direct tropical sunlight, Laktokhan® is fully active up to 30+ Celsius, which makes it the perfect travel companion.
While human strains are the best strains, not all human strains are equal. The microflora in our GI tract is a very complex community. Human sourced probiotics are adapted to the gut environment. They are genetically mutated to adapt in the human gut environment due to the changes in lifestyle, nutrition, and environmental toxins.
We have learned from science that the adaptation process evolves continuously during one’s lifetime due to many environmental factors, such as climate changes, lifestyle, and nutrition.
Most of the strains in Laktokhan® can survive intestinal acid and bile, and they implant themselves on specific intestinal receptors, thus contributing to a longer-lasting, consistently beneficial effect. Laktokhan® also contains the prebiotic inulin, feeding only the beneficial bacteria, not the harmful organisms. Probiotics are live bacteria and in order for them to continue living they need to feed, and they do on prebiotics mixed with the probiotics. There are mainly two prebiotics on the market, FOS and Inulin. We use Inulin.
In one study, hamsters were fed semipurified diets containing 20 g/100 g fat, 0.12 g/100 g cholesterol and 0 (control), 8, 12 or 16% inulin for 5 weeks. At the end of that time, researchers found that plasma total cholesterol concentrations were significantly lowered by 18, 15 and 29% in hamsters fed 8, 12 and 16% inulin, respectively.
Laktokhan® is completely vegan, the prebiotic is sourced from chicory root; depending on how chicory root is processed (naturally or chemically), it can be either FOS or Inulin directed. An “all-natural” means of extraction is what Laktokhan® uses. It produces by fermentation long-chain fatty acids in the form of inulin. If a chemical extraction is used, a short-chain fatty acid is produced in the form of FOS. FOS can contribute to undesirable bacterial and yeast overgrowth.
By maintaining a balance between beneficial and harmful bacteria, Laktokhan® helps to manage acute infectious diarrhea and reduces the frequency of gastrointestinal disorders, such as diarrhea and nausea, during antibiotic use.
